Next To Nothing

The morning after the memorial,
up too early, I slipped out for a coffee
wishing I was the type
who could stay where I’m put,
in my bed of roses, with a husband
who isn’t dead.
That he’s the cream in my cup,
the sugar in my bowl,
means next to nothing,
but next to nothing, is what I’d be
without him. Yesterday
we all said goodbye to his younger brother.
There were fireworks over the river.
His wife knew he’d have loved that,
and that’s something, I hope
for her, anyway.
