Eligibility

The Ronald Sukenick/American Book Review Innovative Fiction Contest is open to any writer of English who is a citizen of the United States and who has not previously published with Fiction Collective Two. Submissions  may  include a collection of short stories, one or more novellas, or a novel. Works that have previously appeared in magazines or in anthologies  may  be included.  Translations  and previously self-published collections are not eligible. To avoid  conflict of interest, former or current students or close friends of the final judge for 2009, Lidia Yuknavitch, are ineligible to win the contest. Employees and Board members of FC2 are not eligible to enter.

Judges

Finalists for the Prize will be chosen by the following members of the FC2 Board of Directors: Kate Bernheimer, R. M. Berry,  Noy Holland, Brenda Mills, Michael Martone, Lance Olsen (Chair), Matt Roberson, and  Susan Steinberg.

The winning manuscript in 2009 will be chosen from the finalists by FC2 Board of Directors member Lidia Yuknavitch.

Selection criteria will be consistent with FC2’s stated mission to publish “fiction considered by America’s largest publishers too challenging, innovative, or heterodox for the commercial milieu,” including works of “high quality and exceptional ambition whose style, subject matter, or form pushes the limits of American publishing and reshapes our literary culture.”

Deadlines

All entries must be postmarked no later than  1 November 2008. The winner will be announced  May 2009.

Prize

The Prize includes $1000 and publication by FC2, an imprint of the  University of Alabama Press. In the unlikely event that no suitable manuscript is found among entries in a given year, FC2 reserves the right not to award a prize.

Manuscript Format

Please submit either TWO hardcopies of the manuscript, or ONE hardcopy and one Word file of the manuscript on a labeled CD.

The manuscript must be:

–anonymous: the author’s name or address must not appear anywhere on the manuscript (the title page should contain the title only); include a separate cover page with your name and contact information;

–typed on standard white paper, one side of the page only; paginated consecutively; bound with a spring clip or rubber bands; no paper clips or staples, please.

Please include a self-addressed, stamped postcard for notification that manuscript has been received, and a self-addressed, stamped, regular business-sized envelope for contest results.

We strongly advise that you send your manuscript first class.

Please retain a copy of your manuscript; FC2 cannot return manuscripts.  Submission of more than one manuscript is permissible if each manuscript is accompanied by a $25 reading fee.  Once submitted, manuscripts cannot be altered; the winner will be given the opportunity to make changes before publication.  Simultaneous submissions to other publishers are permitted, but FC2 must be notified immediately if manuscript is accepted elsewhere. FC2 will consider all finalists for publication.

Giving literature a serious Panking

When I arranged to interview the staff of PANK Magazine, I was told to meet them at the KBC. Hearing that, I knew this small group meant business, but knew how to have fun, too.

We met on a Thursday afternoon and in attendance were associate editor Roxane Gay (graduate student, RTC), assistant editors Enneessa Hahn (sophmore, STC) and Ben Dowker (senior, STC), reader Ashley Marie Fallon (junior, STC), and editor Matt Seigel (Assistant Professor of Diverse Literatures and Creative Writing, Humanities). Over a couple of pints, they laid out the story like this:

A nonprofit literary magazine, PANK rose from the ashes of the now extinct C-Literary Journal in 2006 when Professor Seigel was handed the project and told to “do something” with it. PANK 1 was born the following year, publishing poetry, short fiction, creative nonfiction, photography, and visual art from both nationally prominent voices as well as some closer to home.

“People may be surprised to learn those aren’t mutually exclusive points,” said Seigel.

The production of PANK begins with submissions, which are collected and read year-round by the staff. Selections are then made for the print and web editions, then the team switches into design and production mode.

For the first two print issues and all of the web content, PANK was designed by STC Capstone students, but printed by University of Minnesota Printing Services.

“Our design, both online and print, is always in-house and always will be,” said Seigel. “Why go elsewhere when the best are right at home. Printing, however, is very, very expensive, and we’ve been forced to bid that job nationally.”

Distribution is still regional, though the staff are working on getting the magazine into more independent bookstores around the country.

Locally, PANK can be found at Northwind Books, the Kangas Cafe (formally the Daily Grind), and the Community Arts Center, all three in Hancock.

Abroad, PANK can be found at Quimby’s, an eclectic bookstore located in Chicago, IL. This fall, PANK be present at the Small Press and Literary Magazine Fair at Wordstock in Portland, OR, at the Mid-West Small Press and Literary Magazine Fair at the Kenyon Review Literary Festival in Gambier, OH, and at the 2008 Miami Book Fair International in Miami, FL.

“We’re a member organization of the Association of Writers and Writing Programs and of the Council of Literary Magazines and Presses,” said Seigel. “We’re shelved in the Library of Congress and are a part of the Little Magazines Special Collection at the University of Wisconson, Madison, Library. For a 3-year-old literary publication from a technical university with an annual print run of 500 copies, we’re pretty proud of the product and of the mark we’re making.”

Why a literary magazine?

“We’re about creating the future here, right?” Seigel asked. “PANK spotlights and augments a very distinct creative community in the Keweenaw by bringing the national literary scene to here.”

“PANK connects this place to a different landscape, a broader context,” said Gay.

“It’s a great resource for local readers and writers,” Dowker chimed in.

“I think PANK goes a long way to showcasing some of the amazing work that passes through these portals besides just that of engineers,” Seigel said.

Why PANK?

“[The name] kind of came out of left field,” Seigel said. “We wanted something eccentric, something with good metaphoric potential, something with brand appeal, but also something that linked us to the community we come out of.”

The word “pank” is a regional term, a verb which means to pack down snow or earth, to make a trail. As in pank down the path. In the UP, there”â„¢s some evidence that miners used it as a term describing the packing of dynamite into blast holes.

“It’s also a word that suggests its own meanings,” added Gay.

PANK 1 was printed in 2007, PANK 2 in 2008. Volume 3 is scheduled for release in January 2009. *The Gatewood Prize In Poetry. Switchback Books announces a call for entries for the Gatewood Prize in poetry, an annual competition for a first full-length collection of poems by a woman writing in English between the ages of 18 & 39. The Kinereth Gensler Awards welcome submissions from emerging as well as established poets. Entrants must reside in New England, New York State or New Jersey, beginning no later than December 1, 2008. The Kinereth Gensler Awards winners receive $2000 & publication. *Carnegie Mellon Poetry Series.* We will be reading unsolicited poetry manuscripts in late 2008. We will only read poets not previously been published by CMU Press. We view this reading period as neither a contest nor as being exclusively for first books. Rather, it is a time for us to review manuscripts by writers whose work we might not otherwise be familiar with. Of the six books we publish each year, at least two are selected from this reading period. *Hollis Summers Poetry Prize.* Named after the distinguished poet who taught for many years at Ohio University & made Athens, Ohio, the subject of many of his poems, this competition invites writers to submit unpublished collections of original poems. Competition open to both those who have not published a book-length collection & those who have. Postmark date, *October 31*. Those postmarked later will be returned unread. Mss of 60-95 pages should be typed on standard sized paper or be a clean photocopy. Do not send your only copy. Name, address, & phone number should appear on the title page. Acknowledgments should appear on a separate page. Individual collections must be the work of a single author. Translations not accepted. Multiple submissions to other publishers are acceptable provided we are informed if the ms is accepted elsewhere. The ms should be submitted in a plain 9 x 11.5″ manila folder. Because we cannot guarantee the return of the mss, all entries become the property of Ohio University Press and those not chosen will be recycled. All contestants will be notified following the final selection. Include SASP if you wish acknowledgment of receipt. Submissions should include a check for $20 made out to Ohio University Press. The winning ms will be published by Ohio University Press the following year & will be awarded a cash prize of $1000. *New Voices Award. *The Award will be given for a children’s picture book story by a writer of color. Winner will receive cash grant of $1,000 & our standard publication contract, including our standard advance & royalties. An Honor Award winner will receive a cash grant of $500. Contest open to writers of color who are residents of the US & who have not previously had a children’s picture book published. Writers who have published in other venues, such as children’s magazines, young adult fiction & nonfiction, are eligible. Only unagented submissions accepted. Mss previously submitted to Lee & Low Books for this award are not eligible. Mss should address the needs of children of color by providing stories with which they can identify & relate, & which promote a greater understanding of one another. Submissions may be fiction or nonfiction for children ages five to twelve. Folklore & animal stories will not be considered. Mss should be no more than 1500 words in length & accompanied by a cover letter that includes the author’s name, address, phone number, e-mail address, a brief biographical note, relevant cultural & ethnic information, how the author heard about the award, & publication history, if any. Mss should be typed double-spaced on 8.5″ x 11″ paper. SASE with sufficient postage must be included for return of the ms. Up to two submissions per entrant. *The University of Arkansas Press *invites submissions of manuscripts for its poetry series. We are committed to publishing diverse kinds of poetry by a diversity of poets. The only criterion is excellence. The series is open to all book-length manuscripts of 60 to 90 pages, except translations. Individual poems may have been published in journals & anthologies. No more than one manuscript per author, please. Manuscripts will be accepted during the months of September & October. The postmark deadline for entries is *October 31*. (Please do not send revisions once you have sent a manuscript.) Four books will be chosen for publication the following year. Manuscripts should be typed & single-spaced, with no more than one poem per page. Please include an acknowledgments page detailing the publication history of the manuscript’s poems. Matt is one of our favorite poets and one of the nicest guys on the face of the planet. Congratulations to him! Stolen straight from the LofC site: “Matthew Thorburn’s first book,  Subject to Change  (2004), was selected by Brenda Hillman for the New Issues Poetry Prize. He is the recipient of a 2008 Witter Bynner Fellowship from the Library of Congress, selected by Poet Laureate Charles Simic. His other honors include the  Mississippi Review  Prize, two Hopwood Awards from the University of Michigan, and the Belfast Poetry Festival’s inaugural Festivo Prize. His poems have appeared in  The Paris Review, Poetry,  Michigan Quarterly Review  and other journals, and he has contributed book reviews to  Boston Review,  Rattle  and  Octopus. A graduate of the University of Michigan and the MFA program at The New School, Matthew Thorburn lives in New York City, where he works as the business development writer for an international law firm. He recently completed  a new collection of poems, entitled  Like Luck.”
