~by Mia Sara
The Parade
My first shame made manifest
in well-tailored garments
hand sewn at the hems
with sacrificial stitches.
This wearing truth, it pins me down,
like the weight of my feet in a bucket of cement,
all dressed up in Sunday’s best,
on my grandfathers shoulders,
my heretic heart tucked under my bonnet.
