The Lightning Room: Blog People

To best understand Mia Sara’s interview it is necessary that you stand up, forget about Julie, and get yourself to the top of the Chrysler building. Check out her column Wrought & Found.

 Interview by DeWitt Brinson

1) Where do you find the photos? Do you search for them or wait until they find you?

“Woman, stuck in a bag, on the Chrysler Building.” An example of my everyday image search. Also, I’m colorblind, so I tend to like images in black and white, but sometimes color is worth it.

2) What’s the most common sound in your current life?

The sound of my daughter talking to her “Nintendog” Sparky.

 3) What was the first poem you fell in love with and how does that differ from the first person you loved?

“Down By The Salley Gardens” by W.B. Yeats. The first person I loved was of Irish extraction, melancholy, and musical. Not so different. Still some of my favorite attributes, I’m a sucker for a melancholy baby.

4) How has your writing changed? How would you like to see it evolve ten years from now?

My writing is shorter. The discipline of coming up with something for the PANK blog has forced me to go for more, with less, and to stop obsessing about every line for months. I have these niggling fears about being trivial and small, in a way. I’m not a BIG thinker, more of a microscopic thinker, so maybe in ten years, that won’t bug me anymore. That’d be good.

5) Take a book near you, turn to page 43, explain the 3rd line or sentence without using any of the same words or telling what book it is.

No guru, no method, no teacher.

6) Give the best health tip you’ve got.

Stand up.

7) What makes you feel trapped? How do you get free?

My family makes me feel trapped, but I don’t want to be free. Walking on a city street is the best stop-gap cure, when the feeling gets overwhelming. Maybe it’s love that makes me feel trapped. Probably. Oh, and driving. Driving sucks.

8) Who aren’t you?

Julie, the cruise director.

9) Tell a dirty joke.

Question: How are men and wall-to-wall carpets the same?

Answer: If you lay them good once, you can walk all over them.

 10) How often do you make time for yourself?

 11) Does practicing one art help you with another or are they all separate?

They are the same.

12) Are you the actress from Ferris Bueller’s Day Off? Please give your response of what that’s like in the form of a haiku.

What is a haiku?
I spent so long playing dumb
sometimes, I forget.
